Seth Godin, in a recent podcast, talked about how something as simple as a song can set the culture. He used the example of the ‘alphabet song’ that we all learned as kids – you know the one “A,B,C,D,E,F,G – H,I,J,K,LMNOP etc.
Seth Godin highlighted how this cemented the alphabet into our world, in an order that didn’t allow any letters to fall through the cracks. The song ensures that we all understand “this is the alphabet, this is the order, and these are the only letters, no more, no less”.
When we look at our sales cultures, what is it that is the equivalent of the ‘Alphabet Song’? What is it that says this is the way we do things, this is the order and these are the elements?
It is the sales process!
Without the sales process underpinning your sales culture, then your culture will continue to shift, morph and will end up far from where you want it to be. Why? Because without the process, every person who has a sales role in your business will go about it differently, will change when they feel like it, will bring both good and bad habits and will approach the customer based on their own beliefs and values.
Many companies look to training to help them get hold of their sales team and to try and bring some level of consistency into their approach, however, this falls over quickly because the training has no anchor to attach itself to, and get guidance from, to then develop the training and competency programs needed.
In my book ‘The Art of Relationship Selling’, I have 3 chapters dedicated to the sales process, why it is important and how to go about making it ‘part of what you do around here’. Well worth the read if you want to develop, change or enhance yours sales culture.
Without the sales process underpinning your sales culture you are a ship without a rudder. You’ll win some sales and lose some sales, but you’ll never really understand why. And if you don’t understand why, you will never be able to train and develop your people. You will never fully live up to the promises you make to your customers and your CRM will not deliver the success you are looking for.
So, what is your song? What are the words, the order and the elements of your sales process?
Have a read of my book, it just may give you some ideas.
Happy selling,
Andrew Nisbet
